UAE is classified as low to moderate seismic hazard (PGA 0.05g–0.15g depending on zone), but Dubai and Abu Dhabi building codes require seismic detailing for certain structural connections. For post-installed rebar and anchor bolts, the embedment depth is the primary parameter affecting pull-out capacity and ductility performance under seismic loading.

When Is Seismic Rating Required in UAE?

Dubai Building Code requires seismic detailing for: residential buildings above 3 storeys, all commercial buildings, and connections in lateral force-resisting systems. For post-installed anchors in these applications, specify epoxy anchor with ETA seismic category C1 or C2 rating from a notified body. Iron-cement adhesive is suitable for non-structural and gravity-only connections without seismic detailing requirements.

Hole Preparation Affects Pull-Out More Than Embedment

Pull-out test data consistently shows: a properly cleaned hole at 10× diameter outperforms a poorly cleaned hole at 12× diameter. Three compressed-air blows + wire brush + three more blows is the minimum for iron-cement and mandatory for epoxy anchors. Skipping this step invalidates the embedment calculation.
